Marselle Qin's Character Sheets
Marselle Qin -
- Marselle was always gifted. As a child, his father - a companion, and the librarian of the companion guild library on Sihnon - made sure he was well educated in all of the arts. Books were his best friends, as he grew, and he was surrounded by tales from Earth-that-was, by histories and novels, by fantastic works of wordplay that lay the universe before him, his for the taking. He spent much time with the girls (and few boys) who were training in the companion arts, and from them learned the ways of high society, of art, of music, of control and of seduction.
His education went marvelously - he threw himself into his studies with great abandon, and by the time that young men his age were working their way through university, he was already a professor of history at the prestigious Dao Wo Tsung University on Londinium. His students, most not much younger than himself, are the children of the most powerful men and women in the core, and to a man they remember his classes fondly.
Then, the war broke out.
Marselle had always been a free thinker, a student of history, of law, and nothing he had ever studied would let him justify the Alliance's expansionist actions. After almost losing his job for saying as much in a lecture, he was left with a quandry - stay quiet, betray his beliefs, and live in a society he had no faith in... or leave, and fight for a cause that was not his own, on planets he had only ever read about in passing.
Within a week, he had shipped out to the rim. His quick wit and competence earned him a feild commission on the first seizure of Athens; as a second lieutenant of the 19th Ratters, he lead two small squads in the defense of the capital when the Alliance came to take the planet back. Holed up in an abandoned pastry shop that stood amidst the rubble of a firebombed city, Marselle himself took the forward position, helping to repell wave after wave of Alliance Marines as his men broke and ran behind him.
Running low on ammunition, Marselle came out from behind cover to fire one last volley into the enemy...
... and found that he had misjudged their speed, coming face to face with a marine who knocked him unconcious with the butt of her rifle.
The next six years of the war found Marselle imprisoned as a POW, in solitary confinement in a cell barely long enough for the man to lay down in. He spoke to no-one, ate nothing but the protein paste dropped through his door every day, and had nothing to do but think - though he would later refer to it as "Composing." Far from breaking his will, the confinement strengthened him, taking an already stubborn man and making his mind a fortress.
When the war ended, he was released - he had "behaved," and committed no crime save choosing the "wrong" side. He wanders, now, a quiet man - only because he has spent so long speaking to nobody. When pressed, he slides quiet easily into the role of a man of high-society; he cleans up well, and his poise and manner can make people ignore the slight gauntness to his face, the roughness of his fingers, or the angular scar from a rifle butt that split his right cheek open so long ago.
Assets:
Friends in High Places, Minor - To hundreds of young men and women, Marselle is remembered as a loved and respected professor - and those young men and women are from the most prestigious families in the 'verse. His former students have found their way to positions of power all over the alliance - magistrates, sherrifs, port officers and merchants - and think of him quite fondly.
Highly Educated, Minor - Marselle had only the best education the core worlds could provide; he grew up in a library, and has always been a voracious reader.
Military Rank, Minor - Though he wisely does not make much show of his commission in the Independent forces, Marselle was a first lieutenant of a brigade well known for its fierce close quarters tactics.
Tough as Nails, Major - A battle on a planet he didn't care for. Six years in confinement for a cause that was not his own. Always a stubborn man, Marselle's life has forged him into a man who can take just about anything.
Complications:
Branded, Minor - When Marselle left to join the war, he left his family, his students, his career - everything that most men value. He's viewed as a traitor even still on his home planet, and as such has not returned since the end of the war.
Hooked, Minor - Marselle has an abiding love for all forms of spirits, and is what some might call a functioning alcoholic.
Phobia, Minor - Having lived for six years in a space barely the size of a mattress, Marselle dealt with his confinement by making himself comfortable in small places - as such, he's developed a sort of agoraphobia, and wide-open spaces (deep ocean, flat prairie, the black) make him supremely uncomfortable.
Credo, Major - Marselle is a nihilist of sorts; he views his own life as expendable, a tool to be used - or discarded - as necessary. Marselle will never run simply to save his own skin; he will never avoid a dangerous situation simply because it is dangerous to -him-.
Hero Worship, Minor - Always a student of history, Marselle's favorite stories growing up came from the dispatches of John Saint John, the "Gentleman General" of the last great war on earth that was. The British officer was everything Marselle always wished to be - polite and debonaire to a fault, yet merciless when the time came to do violence. He seeks to emulate the man in all that he does.
