Name: Martin Campbell
Age: 28
Ht: 5'10"
Wt: 180 lbs.
Martin lived in Texas on the family ranch with his brother Fred. He ran a shop in town where he did repair work on vehicles of all types and the ocassional house call to fix an AC or hot water heater. Martin (not Marty unless you're a female he's attracted to) had a passion and talent for working with his hands, women, and shooting. Martin was content in Texas, he spent a lot of time working and enjoyed a little popularity as one of the few mechanics in town worth anything. Free time was spent hunting on the ranch, much to his brother's chagrin Martin showed little class with this. One tale relates how Martin, angered at not hitting with the rifle they had, converted it into an automatic weapon and managed to kill not only the wolf he was shooting at, but blow up his truck in the process. He got a helluva laugh out of it, but it scared the hell out of everyone within half a mile.
When the cattle on the ranch were Commandeered and Fred signed up to fight, Martin, sticking with his brother, went with him. He left his girlfriend, Stacy McDonald, a best friend, Davey Miller (who later enlisted) and his dog, D.O.G. behind. Fred and Martin managed to keep together up until Fred's second injury that took him out of service for a little while. Martin was shuttled off to another unit where he sustained his first injury of the war when he was shot three times in the stomach. The soldier that did it left him for dead but a skilled medic got him before he bled out. Now Martin carries three scars on his stomach as a reminder of his mortality. Martin was sent to the Battle of Serenity as part of the spear's shaft. One of the second wave of units to hit the ground. It was a wreck. They were getting killed, but for Martin and the men he was with it only doubled their resolve to fight. Each casualty became another martyr adding fuel to their fire. When he took a round to the lung he had been lucky enough to be hauled back to the rear for treatment. He had been in a bed for weeks when he had been given word they had surrendered to the Alliance. Martin was pissed, but looking around at all the death and wounded around him, nodded his response with his own quiet resolve. He determined to never forget what he had seen...
Martin earned a Medal of Valor during the war when he and Fred cleared an apartment building of Alliance soldiers. Martin killed 6 and Fred killed 5 of the squad, though they argue about the number every time it comes up. More than once, its come to blows. Martin developed a few solid friendships, Limps, a middle aged man who ran a shop at one of Martin's duty stations. Limps had one of those diseases that made his legs useless. One of those diseases those Alliance guys never got. He wasn't bitter or pissed about it, but watching him try to walk around always irked Marty and reinforced why he joined the Browncoats in the first place. Limps was cool, not only did he always have a way to get parts, but he had a lot of really cool stories there was also another woman. One he kept secret from Stacy. Janet worked at one of the bars he used to hang out at as a waitress, and they kept in touch up until he was arrested, he still has a thing for her, and thinks when he gets out of prison he'll go find her.
Since the war ended Martin has resumed work as an engineer, repairing vehicles of all kinds. He seldom sees any of his battle buddies from the war, but really only ever tried to track one down, Davey, who never returned home. Stacy and him got back together when he returned home but she has problems with his war stories and the attitude he has about life since the war.
Martin went to visit his brother in Beylix, all Browncoated out. They were in a bar having a great time when some shit went down. Some alliance asshole decided it was okay to show his brother up and talk shit about it. Martin did the only thing he could think of. Martin was drunk, so its a little hazy to him, but apparently he caught the guy in the temple with his beer bottle. Fred did the only thing he could do when said Major's buddies jumped up and started swinging on Martin, he started swinging... It all ended with the brothers busted up pretty good, three of the guys (including the major) getting medical treatment, 5 assault charges and 1 of aggravated assault on an officer, inciting a riot, resisting arrest, and vandalism. Bar owners tend to take their tables being broken when you throw an Alliance soldier through them a little personally.... The Major then used Mommy and Daddy's well cultivated political clout to get them both thrown into The Rock. The Major still carries a grudge, so does Martin. Within a month both Fred and Martin had been sentenced to 4 years on The Rock.
Martin quickly set about making enemies in The Rock, Turtle Tom Hindle, though his beef with the warden's cousin was because of his brother, and Benito McGreggor, like his brother, Martin thinks he's a prick, and while he respects how dangerous the man can be, he doesn't respect the man. Vincent is okay in Martin's book. He doesn't cause too many problems for Martin, so he tends to be apathetic towards him. The only other person he has communicated with thats not in prison with him is Julia, Fred's ex-wife. Mainly she was helping to track down Stacy, who seems to have gotten remarried in the time Martin has been on the Rock. Apparently no one told her he had been arrested, or they did and she decided to cut her losses. Martin doesn't blame her for it. He could've been a better man for her, so she deserves to be happy.
Martin has already decided life on the Rock sucks, and he's actively looking for a way out. With his history he's already figured he'll have enemies anywhere he goes, and he's used to it.
